Top 7 Attractions and Unique Experiences in Oberammergau

Oberammergau is one of the most stunning villages I came across while exploring the Bavarian Alps. The mural-covered houses and the breathtaking mountain peaks surrounding it make it truly unforgettable.

But as I explored, I realized it’s more than just a beautiful place. Oberammergau has so many amazing things and unique experiences to offer, and I can’t wait to share them with you!

1. Passion Play — A Tradition Like No Other

One of the most fascinating things I discovered about Oberammergau is its rich tradition—the Passion Play.

Did you know Oberammergau’s Passion Play is the most famous one in the world? It’s been performed every decade since 1634! Over 2,000 locals come together to tell the story of Jesus’s journey to the crucifixion, and the whole performance lasts five to eight hours, with a dinner break in between.

It all started as a promise the villagers made during a plague, and now it’s a UNESCO cultural heritage event and a deeply spiritual experience. Even if you visit during a non-performance year, you can still check out the Passion Play Theater, explore the exhibition, take a behind-the-scenes tour, and see the costumes and photos from past performances.

2. Lüftlmalerei — An Art of History and Culture

Oberammergau’s picturesque look is mostly thanks to Lüftlmalerei—the unique art that decorates the houses in the Alps and nearby areas. These traditional frescoes are all over the place in Oberammergau, making the streets really colorful and interesting.

The murals usually show scenes from the Bible, saints, or everyday life, and they’re done in a way that makes flat walls look like they have depth. A must-see is Pilatushaus, right near the Tourist Information Center. It has this incredible Trompe-l’œil mural by Franz Zwinck from 1784, showing when Jesus was denied by Pontius Pilate.

Inside, you can see artists working on all sorts of things—carvings, paintings, and even metalwork. You can watch them at work, learn about their craft, and maybe even chat with them.

3. Parish Church — A Deeper Look to Village’s Heritage

Oberammergau feels like an outdoor museum, especially with its Lüftlmalerei murals. But it’s not just about the art – the village has strong religious ties (the Passion Play is a big hint), making it a peaceful destination for anyone wanting to reflect and renew.

A must-see is the Parish Church of Saint Peter and Paul, a beautiful example of South German Baroque architecture, built between 1735 and 1749. Inside, you’ll find detailed stucco work, sculptures, and impressive frescoes, including a breathtaking ceiling fresco from 1741 that makes the church feel even larger.

If you want a deeper understanding of the church’s history, you can also join a guided spiritual tour.

4. Wooden Handicrafts — The Talent of the Locals

Oberammergau isn’t just known for its Passion Play and stunning murals—it’s also home to an amazing woodcarving tradition that goes all the way back to the 12th century.

You’ll find over 100 talented woodcarvers here, creating one-of-a-kind hand-carved pieces, many with beautiful religious designs, and you can check them out in shops all over town.

Some standout spots include ALBL Oberammergau, a family-run business crafting amazing wooden art since 1556, and Toni Baur’s workshop, where you’ll find gorgeous nativity scenes and carved figures.

5. Serene Alpine Views — The Start of Many More

Just outside Oberammergau, you’ll find breathtaking destinations to explore.

Laber Panoramaview on Laber Mountain offers stunning views of the town and Ettal, plus snacks and beers from Ettal Abbey at the Laber Berggaststätte. You can easily reach it with the Mount Laber Cableway.

Mount Kofel is a great hike with panoramic views of the Ammertal and ancient Ice Age moors. The trail is steep but manageable, with rewarding vistas along the way.

For a relaxing stop, visit Kolbensattelhütte (Kolbensattel Lodge), surrounded by meadows and pine trees. Enjoy a meal and beer from Ettal Abbey on the patio while taking in the valley views. Reach it by chairlift or a short hike.

6. Alpine Coaster — There’s Fun and Adventure!

Oberammergau is not just about culture—there’s plenty of fun and adventure too! One of the top family-friendly attractions in the Bavarian Alps is the Alpine Coaster. Located at Kolbensattel, it’s the world’s longest weatherproof toboggan run, complete with a magnet system for added safety.

Your adventure starts at Kolbensattel Lodge, where you’ll take off on a thrilling 2,600-meter ride down into the valley. Along the way, you’ll twist and turn through 73 bends, 9 jumps, and 7 waves, reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h and dropping 400 meters in altitude.

Safety is a priority on the Alpine Coaster, with a modern magnetic brake system, brake levers on both sides, and comfortable seats with backrests and seat belts. You can control your speed, making the ride as relaxing or exciting as you want.

Getting to the start of the Alpine Coaster at Kolbensattel Lodge is an adventure in itself. You can either hike there in about 1.5 hours or take the Kolben chairlift. For the latest info on hours and visitor details, check the official Kolbensattel website to make sure you have the most up-to-date information for your visit.

7. Nearby Attractions & More Outdoor Activities

Oberammergau is in a great spot surrounded by mountains, making it the perfect base for all kinds of outdoor activities. Whether you enjoy hiking on trails like those at Kofel or Laber, exploring nature, or checking out historical sites and architecture, there’s something for everyone.

In the summer, you can explore the Ammergau Alps Meditation Trail for a peaceful journey of self-discovery. If you’re looking for something even more relaxed, the WellenBerg Leisure and Fun Pool is a great spot to sunbathe, swim, and enjoy the fresh mountain air. For cycling enthusiasts, mountain bikes are available for rent, so you can ride through scenic meadows and the German countryside, all with stunning mountain views.

Winter in Oberammergau has its own set of cool attractions. If you’re into snowboarding, the Snowpark Oberammergau is a must-visit, with plenty of obstacles to test your skills. There are also 4-star cross-country skiing trails in the area, perfect for some winter excitement. For something a bit different, you can join a guided snowshoeing tour to explore the Ammergau Alps.

If you use Oberammergau as your base for outdoor activities, you might find yourself wanting to stay longer.

Why? Because it’s so close to some of the best attractions in the Bavarian Alps. From Oberammergau, you can easily reach places like Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, and even Neuschwanstein Castle in about an hour or so.

But even better, there are some amazing spots that are even closer, like Ettal Abbey and Linderhof Palace, both just a quick 30-minute drive or bus ride away.

  • Ettal Abbey is a working Benedictine monastery full of history, stunning architecture, and beautiful frescoes. You can stroll through the lovely gardens, check out the outhouses, and even visit the abbey’s brewery to learn about local culture and chat with the monks.
  • On the other hand, Linderhof Palace is a smaller, yet equally impressive, palace built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. It’s the only one of his palaces that was finished, and its design is inspired by the grandeur of Versailles. As you walk through, you’ll get to see the cozy rooms, all designed specifically for King Ludwig himself.

Planning to visit Oberammergau? Check out a couple of my tips.

During the regular season, when the Passion Play isn’t happening, half a day is usually enough to check out the main highlights of Oberammergau. You can wander through the village’s charming streets, admire the beautiful Lüftlmalerei murals, visit the historic Pilatushaus, and explore the local wooden handicrafts.

If you’re looking for some fun and adventure, the Oberammergau Alpine Coaster and nearby hiking spots are great additions to your visit. Just keep in mind, if you add these activities, your visit might stretch into a full day.

Unless you’re using Oberammergau as a base to explore the Bavarian Alps, I wouldn’t suggest staying longer than a day since there are other places in the Alps worth spending more time at.

If you’re flying into Germany for a trip to Oberammergau, you’ll likely start your journey in Munich. As the largest city in Bavaria, Munich is well-connected to Oberammergau, whether you’re driving, taking a bus, or using the train.

For public transport, you can check schedules and availability on the Deutsche Bahn website. The trip usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, whether you’re driving or taking public transit.

Whether to rent a car or take the train depends on your travel plans. If you’re mainly exploring the village and don’t need to go to places not served by buses, I’d recommend skipping the car rental. Public transport will work just fine.
