Epic Jungfrau Region 7-Day Itinerary Based in Interlaken

The Jungfrau Region is just a small part of Switzerland, but don’t underestimate how many incredible sights and unforgettable experiences you can have here. Seven days isn’t enough to see everything or fully experience the region, but one week is enough to catch the highlights and call it an ultimate trip to the Swiss Alps. This itinerary will show you how.

Good to know:

  1. With this plan, you’ll have just one home base while exploring the Jungfrau Region—one hotel for your entire stay in Interlaken.
  2. This itinerary can still be useful if you’re planning a trip shorter than a week. Each day’s activities are independent, so you can skip or rearrange them without any problem.
  3. If you follow this seven-day itinerary for the Jungfrau Region, you’ll get to experience all the major areas: Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, Lauterbrunnen Valley, and Grindelwald. The trip also includes visits to Piz Gloria and Jungfraujoch. Plus, there’s a full day set aside for hiking.

What to Do in the Jungfrau Region for a Week

Out of all the places I explored in the Jungfrau Region, below these are the ones that offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience, amazing views, and a unique atmosphere. If it’s your first time here, I think you’ll love them too. Harder Kulm, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Harder Kulm

Start your trip to Interlaken with a visit to Harder Kulm. Sitting 1,321 meters above sea level, this viewpoint offers a sweeping view of Interlaken, Unterseen, and beyond.

You’ll see the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz, the snowy peaks of the Jungfrau massif, and the calm expanse of Lake Thun—all in one incredible panorama. It’s like an appetizer that makes you eager to explore more of the Jungfrau region. The viewing platform extends several meters into the air, giving you the thrilling feeling of standing in the sky.

Harder Kulm is close to Interlaken, so it’s an easy first stop. You can either hike for two to three hours or take the century-old funicular, which gets you to the top in just 10 minutes. Since the hike is steep and can be exhausting, I’d recommend saving your energy for other mountains and viewpoints in the area.

Since Harder Kulm is easy to reach and offers incredible views, it tends to get crowded with tourists. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the scenery from the edge of the viewing platform. I highly recommend checking the live webcam for cloud cover before heading up. The trip is only worth it if the views aren’t blocked by fog or clouds.

Inside Saint Beatus Caves, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Inside Saint Beatus Caves

If you’re visiting outside of summer when the weather can be unpredictable, be sure to add the Saint Beatus Caves to your Interlaken itinerary. According to legend, Saint Beatus drove out a fire-breathing dragon here in the 6th century. Today, the cave draws visitors with its impressive stalagmites, stalactites, medieval structures, and waterfalls that look straight out of Rivendell.

Beyond exploring the cave and admiring the waterfalls, you can visit the on-site museum to learn about its history, past explorations, and unique rock formations. Afterward, stop by the Saint Beatus Caves restaurant, where you can enjoy authentic Swiss cuisine with a view of Lake Thun.

Getting there is easy. You can take a boat or a bus, but I recommend bus #21 from Interlaken Ost. It’s a quick 20-minute ride and much faster than the boat.

You can explore the cave on your own, but if you want a more insightful experience, I recommend joining a free guided tour, which starts every 45 minutes and lasts about 75 minutes. Be sure to bring a jacket and some extra layers—the temperature inside stays around 10°C, even in summer.

Oberhofen Castle, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Oberhofen Castle

Oberhofen Castle sits at the northeastern end of Lake Thun, looking like something straight out of a fairytale. This 13th-century castle is a great addition to any Interlaken itinerary, with its impressive architecture and scenic lakeside setting. Over the years, it has gone through several renovations but still maintains its historic character.

Inside, there’s a museum with antique furniture, a chapel decorated with centuries-old murals, a tree gallery, and a beautiful garden overlooking the lake. For a deeper look into the castle’s 800-year history, consider taking a one-hour guided tour. You’ll get access to areas like the dungeon, the residential quarters, and the top of the keep, which offers an amazing view of the Bernese Alps and Lake Thun.

One of the best spots to admire Oberhofen Castle is from the dockside restaurant, where you can capture a perfect shot of its tower with the mountains in the background. The castle, like Saint Beatus Caves, is accessible by ferry or bus #21 from Interlaken Ost. A ferry ride takes about two hours, while the bus gets you there in around 50 minutes.

I recommend taking public transportation to Oberhofen Castle since parking is limited and fills up fast during peak season. If you have plenty of time, taking the ferry is a great option because it gives you a beautiful view of the castle from the water.

Take a look at the guide below to see what Oberhofen Castle has to offer.

Mount Niesen, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Mount Niesen

If you want to catch an incredible sunset, be sure to add Mount Niesen to your Interlaken itinerary. This 2,362-meter peak in the Bernese Oberland offers an amazing view of Lake Thun and Interlaken. What makes it special is its triangular shape, which creates a perfectly shaped shadow over the lake on sunny afternoons.

Mount Niesen is also home to the world’s longest stairway, with an impressive 11,674 steps! However, it’s only open once a year for the Stair Run event. If you’re lucky, you might even see its triangular shadow stretching over a sea of clouds, just like Jackson from Journeyera did. In his blog, he shares his unforgettable hiking experience on Mount Niesen—it’s pure bliss.

There are two ways to reach the summit. If you’re up for a challenge, you can hike up, which takes about five hours. But if you’re short on time, don’t worry. A funicular can take you straight to the top in just a few minutes.

Your trip to Mount Niesen starts at the Niesenbahn valley station in Mulenen, a small village west of Interlaken. While it’s a bit of a journey, getting there is easy. From Interlaken Ost, take a train to Spiez, then transfer to another train heading to Mulenen. The entire trip takes less than an hour, so you’ll be at the base of Mount Niesen before you know it.

Lauterbrunnen, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Lauterbrunnen

South of Interlaken lies a valley so breathtaking that many call it heaven on earth—Lauterbrunnen. This destination is a favorite among travelers exploring the Jungfrau region, and it’s easy to see why. Its cinematic beauty has inspired countless visitors, including J.R.R. Tolkien, who based Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings on this very place.

Lauterbrunnen isn’t just a picturesque valley; it’s also a small town surrounded by charming villages that capture the essence of the Swiss countryside like Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald, Isenfluh, and Stechelberg. These villages may not have a long list of activities, but they offer a chance to explore at a relaxed pace. You can wander through peaceful streets, take in the details of Swiss rural life, or simply enjoy the quiet and the incredible scenery. No matter where you look, the views are unforgettable.

Just a 20-minute train ride from Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen serves as a gateway to this beautiful region. While you can drive to Lauterbrunnen, Isenfluh, and Stechelberg, reaching Wengen, Mürren, and Gimmelwald requires funiculars and cable cars. Hiking is also an option for those who prefer to take in the landscape on foot.

Beyond its villages, Lauterbrunnen is home to breathtaking waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, and even revolving restaurants. We’ll explore each of these in more detail later.

Viewpoint in Trummelbachfalls

Lauterbrunnen, which means “many springs,” is home to Trummelbach Falls, a waterfall you won’t want to miss. It’s a great addition to any Interlaken itinerary, especially if you’re in the Jungfrau region during unpredictable weather.

What makes Trummelbach Falls unique is that it’s Europe’s largest underground waterfall, with an incredible 20,000 liters of water rushing through per second. A visit lets you follow the water’s powerful journey through a series of tunnels, elevators, and hiking paths connecting 10 different viewing platforms. It’s an impressive mix of nature and engineering. Be sure to check out the opening that frames a beautiful view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Getting there from Interlaken is easy. Take a train to Lauterbrunnen, then hop on bus #141 heading south to Stechelberg. In about 10 minutes, you’ll reach the Trummelbach Falls stop. From there, it’s just a short walk to the entrance.

Thinking about adding Trummelbach Falls to your Interlaken itinerary? Make sure to bring warm, waterproof clothing. It’s a bit cooler inside, and the mist from the rushing water can leave you damp if you stay too long. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the paths can be slippery.

Schilthorn, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Schilthorn

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the mountains of Lauterbrunnen. To the west of this scenic valley sits Schilthorn, a peak made famous by a James Bond film. It is a great addition to any Interlaken itinerary for three main reasons: the incredible views, the one-of-a-kind dining experience, and the exciting mini-adventures. The Bond history is just a fun bonus!

As one of the tallest peaks in the Bernese Oberland, Schilthorn offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. On a clear day, you can see the snow-covered peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. And if you’re lucky enough to visit when clouds blanket the valley below, it feels like you’re standing above the world.

Your journey to the summit of Schilthorn starts in the charming village of Mürren, where cable cars take visitors up to the peak. No need to rush to the top, though! Make a stop at Birg, the mid-station along the way. Though not as high as Schilthorn, it has plenty to offer. This is where the real mini-adventures begin.

Birg is home to the Skyline Walk and Thrill Walk, two experiences that bring you face-to-face with the dramatic alpine scenery. Picture yourself standing on a platform or walking across a steel-mesh path with nothing but open air below.

If you’re up for a hike, Birg is also the starting point for trails leading to Grauseeli, a small lake where the Jungfrau massif reflects perfectly on the water’s surface. You can also begin this hike from the Schilthorn summit.

At the top, the highlight is the Piz Gloria Revolving Restaurant. This unique dining spot belongs on every Interlaken itinerary, and for good reason!

Imagine yourself at Piz Gloria, sitting comfortably at your table and enjoying a delicious meal. With each bite, the breathtaking scenery of the Jungfrau region unfolds around you. The restaurant makes a full rotation in under an hour, so you’ll take in every angle of the landscape without even turning your head. It’s a dining experience you won’t forget!

If the weather is on your side, you might see more than 200 alpine peaks from Schilthorn. On especially clear days, it’s even possible to spot the Black Forest in Germany and Mont Blanc in France. To make the most of your visit, check out other attractions like the Bond World museum, the Skyline View platform, the 007 Walk of Fame, and the view lounges.

Jungfraujoch, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch, like Piz Gloria in Schilthorn, is another place in the Jungfrau region that’s worth adding to your Interlaken itinerary. But what makes it so special? For starters, it’s the highest railway station in Europe, earning it the nickname “Top of Europe.” Sitting at an impressive 3,454 meters above sea level, it lies between the towering Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, both of which rise over 4,000 meters.

Jungfraujoch offers some incredible sights, with the Jungfraujoch railway and the Aletsch Glacier being the most remarkable. Visiting means more than just seeing a place—it’s a chance to witness the largest glacier in the Alps and appreciate an incredible feat of engineering. And then there’s the Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest observatories in the world, where you’ll get an unforgettable view of the Aletsch Glacier.

But the experience doesn’t end there. At Jungfraujoch, you won’t just see a glacier—you’ll step inside one. The Ice Palace, an ice tunnel beneath the glacier, features detailed ice sculptures that glow with an otherworldly blue light.

The weather can be unpredictable at 4,000 meters, but don’t worry—if clouds block the view, the Jungfrau Panorama has you covered. Inside, screen projections display the stunning scenery outside, so you won’t miss out.

There are two ways to reach Jungfraujoch: the scenic Jungfraujoch railway or the Eiger Express tri-cable gondola. If you’re short on time, the cable car from Grindelwald is the fastest option. Both routes offer incredible views, but if you prefer a slower, more traditional journey, the train is the better choice.

No matter which one you take, getting to Jungfraujoch from Interlaken requires two transfers.

  1. Interlaken – Lauterbrunnen – Kleine Scheidegg (start of Jungfraujoch Railway)
  2. Interlaken – Grindelwald (Eiger Express Cable Car) – Eiger Glacier Station (Jungfraujoch Railway)

If you’re alone or with a smaller group, joining a tour might help you take advantage of group rates. The Jungfraujoch Railway is definitely worth the experience, but instead of booking a round-trip train ticket, consider taking the Eiger Express Cable Car for one leg of the trip—it’s a good way to cut costs.

One more thing: even in summer, there’s snow at Jungfraujoch, so make sure to dress warmly!

Grindelwald First, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Grindelwald First

If you’re looking for adventure in the Jungfrau region, Grindelwald is the place to be. It’s packed with exciting activities set against a breathtaking alpine backdrop. Located in the eastern part of the region, Grindelwald sits in its own valley, similar to Lauterbrunnen. It’s just a 30-minute drive from Interlaken or a 45-minute train ride from Interlaken Ost, making it easy to reach.

Start your visit at the Heimatmuseum Grindelwald, where you’ll find stories of alpinists who conquered the north face of the Eiger. The museum showcases their climbing gear along with artifacts from local alpine life, making it a great indoor option if the weather isn’t ideal.

On clear days, don’t miss Grindelwald-First, Pfingstegg, and the Glacier Canyon. These are some of the best spots to explore in the area. Once you arrive in Grindelwald, you can head straight to First—the cable car station is just a 10-minute walk from the train station. First is a minor summit of Schwarzhorn, standing at 2,184 meters, and it’s where most of the action happens in Grindelwald!

The Grindelwald-First cable car has three additional stations besides the valley station: Bort, Schreckfeld, and First. Each one offers exciting activities for both kids and adults. So, what can you do at these stops? You can ride a Trottibike, glide through the air on the First-Glider, race down the mountain on a Mountain Cart, soar like a bird on the First-Flieger, or test your nerves on the First-Cliff Walk.

If you’re looking for another adventure, check out Pfingstegg, located east of Grindelwald. It offers a wide view of the town and, like First, is accessible by a short cable car ride that takes less than five minutes. Once you arrive, you’ll find two main attractions: the Toboggan Run and the Fly Line. If you’re traveling with kids, they’ll have a great time at the playground. And the views? Absolutely peaceful. It’s a great addition to your trip.

For something different, explore the Grindelwald Glacier Canyon. This one-kilometer gorge features 300-meter rock walls and the rushing Lutschine River, creating an impressive natural setting. The real thrill, though, is the Canyon Swing. Imagine stepping off a 90-meter platform, feeling a moment of weightlessness before swinging at 120 kilometers per hour. Now that’s an adrenaline rush!

Bachalpsee

Another beautiful alpine lake to add to your Interlaken itinerary is Bachalpsee. You might recognize it from Google’s mountain Gmail theme, but in different seasons, it becomes a photographer’s dream. Its glassy surface reflects the surrounding peaks, though this depends on the weather.

Sitting at 2,265 meters, Bachalpsee offers an incredible view of the Jungfrau massif and its reflection in the water. The lake has two sections, separated by a natural dam. For the best photos, head to the smaller one. Many visitors also bring a picnic to enjoy after spending time at Grindelwald-First.

You can reach Bachalpsee with a one-hour hike from First. It’s also a key stop for those trekking the First-Schynige Platte trail in either direction.

Schynige Platte, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Schynige Platte

Schynige Platte, a mountain ridge in the Schwarzhorn group, is a well-known hiking destination in the Jungfrau region. From here, you get sweeping views of Lake Brienz and the Schwarze Lütschine valley, two breathtaking landscapes divided by the ridge itself.

But Schynige Platte isn’t just about hiking—it’s also a place to experience Swiss traditions. The area is home to more than 600 types of alpine flowers, including the famous Edelweiss, a symbol of purity and resilience.

The adventure starts before you even arrive. The historic 19th-century railway, in operation for over 125 years, makes the journey part of the experience. The ride to the top is slow but scenic, covering just 7 kilometers yet taking nearly an hour from Wilderswil. A few times a year, steam locomotives run along this route—check the schedule at jungfrau.ch for details.

Thinking about visiting Schynige Platte in the summer? You definitely should! Every summer, there’s a free alphorn performance in front of the hotel from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

As for hiking, there are several trails to explore in Schynige Platte. According to my favorite family travel blog, fullsuitcase.com, these are the four best hikes to try:

  1. Daube viewpoint hike (2.4 kilometers, “easy” difficulty)
  2. Oberberghorn panorama trail (3 kilometers, “easy to moderate” difficulty)
  3. Louchernhorn panorama trail (6.1 kilometers, “moderate” difficulty)
  4. Schynige Platte-First hike (16 kilometers, “moderate to hard” difficulty)

The hiking trails of Schynige Platte offer incredible views of natural landmarks like Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, along with Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, Rothorn, and Männlichen. These trails are a treat for the eyes and a great way to connect with nature. If you’re planning a hike, Jurga’s detailed descriptions on fullsuitcase.com can be really helpful. You can also grab a guide from the tourism office in Interlaken.

View of Eiger from Mannlichen, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
View of Eiger from Mannlichen

Männlichen, a mountain peak in the heart of the Jungfrau region, offers some of the best views in the area, which makes it a great addition to your Interlaken itinerary.

Standing at 2,343 meters between Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, Männlichen offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the Jungfrau region. On a clear, sunny day, you can see everything—from Grindelwald to Interlaken, Lake Thun to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and even the towering peaks of Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger. No matter where you look, the scenery is incredible.

To get to Männlichen, you first need to travel from Interlaken to either Grindelwald or Wengen in Lauterbrunnen. From there, you can take a cable car straight to the summit. While hiking up from Wengen is an option, I wouldn’t recommend it since the trails are quite steep.

After visiting Männlichen, most travelers hike down to Kleine Scheidegg on a scenic trail with stunning alpine views and Eiger’s north face in the background. Some complete the hike in about an hour, but I suggest taking your time to enjoy the surroundings. With breaks along the way, it might take closer to an hour and a half.

Once you reach Kleine Scheidegg, you’ll find small alpine lakes and more trails to explore. If you’re up for more hiking, you can reach Lauberhorn or Fallbodensee in about an hour.

Did you know that Männlichen-Kleine Scheidegg is the largest ski resort in both the Jungfrau region and the Bernese Oberland? It’s a great place to add to your Interlaken itinerary in the winter.

Kleine Scheidegg has a train station that can take you back to Wengen or Grindelwald after your visit to Männlichen. It’s also the starting point of the Jungfraujoch railway, so if you have extra time, you can continue your journey to Jungfraujoch!

Lake Brienz, a destination of this Interlaken itinerary, Switzerland
Lake Brienz

Last but not the least, Lake Brienz and its nearby towns should be on your Interlaken itinerary. The lake’s striking turquoise water perfectly reflects the mountains and villages around it. The scenery alone makes it worth the visit.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Lake Brienz. You can start with a simple boat tour, visit the charming lakeside towns, or explore the natural attractions nearby. If you’re up for a scenic train ride, there’s the Brienz-Rothorn Bahn, though I wouldn’t recommend it since it’s quite similar to the train ride to Schynige Platte.

If you’re planning to visit a village along the lake, Iseltwald and Brienz are the most picturesque options. While public transportation can take you there by land, taking a boat is the best way to enjoy the panoramic lake views.

If you really love photography, Iseltwald is the place to be. Sitting on a peninsula in the middle of the lake, this village has a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere. The highlight here is Seeburg Palace at the tip of the peninsula. Renting a boat lets you get up close and capture its reflection on the lake’s milky-blue waters.

Brienz, on the other hand, is the classic alpine town, where every house looks like it belongs on a postcard. It feels like walking through a theme park, except everything is real. A simple stroll is a treat, with flower-filled balconies, cozy shops selling local goods, and countless photo opportunities. Make sure to stop by the lakeside cafés and shops—they’re great places to relax while enjoying the view.

Just a short boat ride away, you’ll find Giessbach Falls, a waterfall that’s as impressive as Trümmelbach Falls. What makes Giessbach special is its 14 tiers and 500-meter drop. From the lake, the waterfall looks like streaks of white cutting through the dense green forest. You can hike along the trails and bridges surrounding it for a closer look.

The sound of rushing water fills the air, and in some spots, you can even walk behind the falls for a unique view of the lake through a curtain of cascading water.

7-Day Plan for Exploring Jungfrau Region from Interlaken

One thing to consider when visiting outdoor destinations like those in the Jungfrau Region is the weather. It can make or break your trip, and sometimes, it can turn an experience into something unforgettable—like when an inversion or a sea of clouds appears at the mountaintop.

That’s why I always make sure my plans are flexible based on the weather, just like this itinerary. For example, if the forecast predicts sunshine for the first three days in the Jungfrau Region, I’d adjust my schedule to visit Lauterbrunnen, Jungfraujoch, and Schilthorn on those days to make the most of the clear skies. These three places are best experienced with good weather.

Day 1: Harder Kulm, Saint Beatus Caves, & Oberhofen Castle

The first day of this itinerary starts with a trip to Harder Kulm, followed by visits to Saint Beatus Caves and Oberhofen Castle on Lake Thun. Traveling between these places is simple since they’re all linked by one bus route. For a more enjoyable return to Interlaken, I suggest taking the ferry—it’s a great way to unwind and take in the views of Lake Thun.

Day 2: Schilthorn and Birg (Murren & Gimmelwald)

This day, you’ll explore the western side of Lauterbrunnen Valley from Interlaken. Start by taking the Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp-Mürren route, which is the fastest way to reach the cable car station for Schilthorn. Be sure to grab your Schilthorn boarding pass to skip the lines.

You’ll spend the day in Schilthorn and Birg, surrounded by incredible mountain views. Have lunch at Piz Gloria, the revolving restaurant—it’s an experience worth having! If you have extra time after your mountain trip, visit the scenic villages of Mürren and Gimmelwald, just below Schilthorn. To end the day, take the Gimmelwald-Stechelberg-Lauterbrunnen route for a short bus ride through Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Day 3: Lauterbrunnen, Trummelbach falls, & Mount Niesen

For this day, you’re exploring Lauterbrunnen, one of the most beautiful valleys in the world. Start by wandering through the village, and don’t forget to take a selfie with Staubbach Falls in the background. Next, visit Trümmelbach Falls, which is just a short trip from Lauterbrunnen.

In the afternoon, get ready for an incredible sunset over Lake Thun from the summit of Mount Niesen. It’s a view worth seeing! From Lauterbrunnen, you’ll return to Interlaken before heading to Mülenen to reach the top of Mount Niesen.

Day 4: Jungfraujoch

You’re spending the entire day at Jungfraujoch, one of the top destinations in the Jungfrau region. With so much to see and do, you’ll be busy for most of the day. Plus, the round trip from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch takes over three hours, so setting aside a full day is a smart choice.

For your journey, I recommend taking the cable car and Jungfraujoch railway. It’s a convenient option that also lets you enjoy incredible views along the way.

Day 5: Mannlichen & Grindelwald

On this day, you’ll explore the Jungfrau region, traveling from Wengen to Grindelwald via Männlichen. Spend your morning visiting Wengen, Männlichen, and Kleine Scheidegg, then gear up for an afternoon of adventure in Grindelwald-First. There are restaurants and beer gardens in Männlichen and Kleine Scheidegg, so you might want to grab lunch there before continuing to Grindelwald.

Day 6: Schynige Platte-First

Don’t miss one of the best classic hikes in the Jungfrau region. For this day, you’ll take on the challenging but incredibly scenic Schynige Platte-First hike, which includes a stop at the breathtaking Bachalpsee. The hike usually takes around 7 to 8 hours, including time for photos and short breaks, so bring a camera and some snacks. If you’re starting in Wilderswil, be sure to catch the last cable car from First to Grindelwald.

Day 7: Lake Brienz, Iseltwald, & Brienz

I’d suggest saving a trip to Lake Brienz for your last day in Interlaken. It’s a great way to relax after all your adventures in the Jungfrau region. With peaceful views and laid-back activities, spending a day by the lake is the perfect way to recharge. Take a boat cruise and unwind at a café with a view!
