A Guide to Discovering Bamberg’s Highlights & Unique Sights

Did you know that Germany has its own version of famous Italian cities? It’s called Bamberg, and it’s often referred to as “Little Venice” or the “Seven Hill City,” or even the “Rome of Germany.”
Just like in Venice, visitors can enjoy a romantic gondola ride in Bamberg. The view of the charming houses as you glide down the River Regnitz? Definitely camera-worthy! And like Rome, Bamberg is home to churches and monasteries sitting on top of the city’s hills. Make sure to wear comfy shoes—you’ll be doing a lot of exploring and sightseeing!

Even though Bamberg shares some similarities with these Italian cities, that doesn’t mean you should skip it if you’ve already been to Venice or Rome. Bamberg has its own unique charm and plenty of new experiences, like its famous smoked beers and the stunning medieval town hall, that make it stand out from other cities.
What makes Bamberg even more interesting is that its historic center, or old town, is well-preserved and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’re in for an authentic experience during your visit.
Along with other cities in the Franconian region like Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Nuremberg, Bamberg is sure to take you on a journey back in time. Let me share some of the places and experiences Bamberg has to offer, which I’m sure you’ll find interesting, especially if you love exploring like I do!
Old Town Bamberg
Old Town Bamberg is a stunning example of an early medieval town in central Europe. From its cobblestone streets to the dramatic sound of Bamberg Cathedral’s bells, medieval charm is all around.
Fun fact: the Old Court in the Old Town is so picturesque that it was chosen as one of the filming locations for The Three Musketeers! You’ll also find the Bamberg Horseman at Bamberg Cathedral. This iconic equestrian statue is actually featured in several places across Germany!
There’s plenty more to explore, so be sure to check out my other post to discover everything else.

Old Town Hall (Rathaus)
There are only a few places in the world with a Town Hall (Rathaus in German) like Bamberg’s. It sits on its own island in the middle of the Regnitz River, which has a fascinating story behind it.
And indeed, if you’re after something stunning, Bamberg’s Town Hall won’t let you down. Its facade is covered in beautiful murals! Walk along the riverbanks near the town hall, and you’ll have plenty of photo ops.
But there’s more! Step inside and you’ll find something smaller but equally impressive—an exhibit showcasing Bamberg’s “white gold.” Hint: it’s an artistic wonder!

Little Gems & Scenic Spots
In Bamberg, you’ll often stumble upon interesting statues, picture-perfect scenes, and breathtaking views. They’re everywhere, whether you’re by the River Regnitz near the Rathaus or up on the hill at Michaelsberg Abbey. Bamberg is truly a small paradise for wanderers!
The stunning facade of Böttinger House, the unique Maximiliansbrunnen, the insightful Sculpture of the Stations of the Cross, and the charming statue of the smiling Queen Cunigunde are just a few of the gems you can discover while wandering the city.
Knowing about these spots will help you make the most of your visit to Bamberg.

Historic Beer & Breweries
Bamberg offers a one-of-a-kind experience with its Smoked beer, or Rauchbier. What makes it special is the traditional brewing process that’s been perfected over a thousand years.
To keep it simple: the unique flavor comes from drying malt over an open flame, giving the beer a smokiness that can range from subtle to rich, almost bacon-like.
When you’re there, you can check out some iconic breweries, or if you’re into it, follow a brewery trail to taste the best Bamberg has to offer, from Fässla to Klosterbräu.

Castles & Palaces
Bamberg, with its history dating back to the 9th century, has plenty of stories and time-traveling spots to offer visitors. The town’s abbeys, castles, and palaces are the best places to explore that history.
Beyond the Old Town, you’ll find Michaelsberg Abbey, home to the Franconian Brewery Museum. If you’re up for something a bit off the beaten path, check out Altenburg, which sits on the highest of Bamberg’s seven hills! Both were built in the 11th century.
You can also visit Seehof Palace, the 17th-century home of Bamberg’s prince-bishops. Take a 45-minute tour and see where they slept, entertained guests, and lived their lavish lifestyle.
There’s so much to discover, so check out my article for more on these attractions.
