Mount Kofel

Rising 1,342 meters above the Bavarian Alps, Mount Kofel is a striking natural feature, often compared to the Matterhorn for its distinctive white peak and similar shape.

Just a kilometer from the summit, the town of Oberammergau serves as a great base for exploring this impressive mountain. From the top, you’re treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding areas, including Pulvermoos and Ammertal to the north, and Weidmoos to the southeast.

These moors, remnants of an Ice Age glacial lake, add a fascinating, prehistoric touch to the already stunning landscape.

If you’re planning a hike, the trail to Mount Kofel starts in Oberammergau. The path winds its way up to Kofelsattel, and from there, the Kofelsteig takes you to the summit. This route is an easy via-ferrata, with just a few exposed sections.

The hike takes about two hours to complete, with an elevation gain of 484 meters. While the trail is steep, it’s also incredibly scenic, passing through a beautiful forest. Once you reach Kofelsattel, the views become truly spectacular as you climb the steep walls of Kofel. The hike isn’t too difficult, but it’s always good to be prepared and stay safe.

Kolbensattelhütte

Located in the mountains just east of Oberammergau, Kolbensattel Lodge is a spot you won’t want to miss.

Sitting at 1,270 meters, this cozy mountain lodge is surrounded by lush meadows and tall pine trees, giving you a jaw-dropping view of the valley below. The lodge has a chill patio where you can grab a meal and sip on drinks from Ettal Abbey while taking in the epic alpine scenery.

To get to the lodge, you can either hike or take a scenic chairlift ride. From the tourist information center, a short 20-minute walk to the west will bring you to the Kolbensesselbahn station, where you can catch the chairlift. After a few minutes on the lift, you’ll arrive at the lodge, ready to enjoy the stunning views.
