Discover Oberammergau’s Iconic Wood Carving Heritage

What really fascinates me about Oberammergau is how its residents express themselves through art.
You’ve probably noticed this in the beautiful murals and the famous Passion Play, but there’s also another creative tradition in the village: woodcarving. What’s amazing about the woodcarving here is its long history, going all the way back to the 12th century.
This skill is not only ancient but also highly respected for its quality and attention to detail. Passed down through generations, it has brought the village international recognition. Most of the carvings have religious themes, including hand-carved sculptures, liturgical furniture, and other religious artwork.
Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation made specifically for the client, and the artisans take great pride in crafting something special for the people and their sacred spaces.
Today, Oberammergau is home to over 100 woodcarvers, and you can find their work in many local shops. They’re really passionate about custom projects, enjoying the chance to connect with people, listen to their ideas, and turn those ideas into unique wooden creations. There are a few great spots where you can dive into this cultural tradition in Oberammergau, and here are two that I found really worth checking out.
ALBL Oberammergau
First up is ALBL Oberammergau, a family-owned company that’s been making stunning wooden masterpieces since 1556—almost 500 years ago! Pretty amazing, right?

Another family-run woodcrafting business in Oberammergau is Toni Baur’s workshop, which has been around for over 40 years. Visit his place to see a room filled with woodcarvings!
