7 Beautiful Places to Explore on a Short Trip to Basel

When exploring Switzerland, the Swiss Alps is always my top priority. It’s the highlight of any trip to this incredible country, and I recommend spending most of your time there. Only visit cities outside the Alps if you have extra time. There’s a good reason for this—the unforgettable adventures and breathtaking landscapes are just the beginning.

If you’re visiting Basel, a quick stay is enough—no more than a day. That might seem short, but it’s plenty of time to see the city’s most beautiful and photogenic places. I’ve picked seven spots worth visiting, which you can find in this post.

Basel Town Hall

Facade and tower of Basel Town Hall, Basel, Switzerland

If you want to step back in time, Marktplatz in Basel is the place to be. Here, you’ll find the Basler Rathaus, or Basel Town Hall, a 500-year-old architectural masterpiece and one of the city’s most beautiful landmarks. Its bold red color and towering structure make it impossible to miss—it dominates the square and immediately grabs your attention.

The Town Hall’s facade is covered in trompe l’oeil murals, creating the illusion of three-dimensional sculptures and decorations. Be sure to step inside, too. The inner courtyard is just as impressive, with vibrant murals covering the walls. As you walk through, you’ll also find a statue of the Roman general Lucius Munatius Plancus, a remarkable piece of art that has been there since the late 16th century.

For a better view of the murals, climb the stairs in the courtyard. The upper walls feature detailed paintings depicting scenes from the Swiss Confederation and symbolic images representing law. If you plan to visit, check the official Basel Tourism website for the Town Hall’s operating hours. Entry is free, but for a deeper understanding of its history and artwork, I recommend joining a guided tour.

The guided tours of Basel Town Hall offer a fascinating look at the art, history, and politics within its walls. You’ll get to explore official meeting rooms, admire the grandeur of the parliamentary chambers, and see centuries-old artifacts and intricate architectural details.

Inside you’ll see that the walls are also covered in frescoes, and the wooden furniture is beautifully carved, each piece telling a story. The artwork and symbols depict everything from the unification of the cantons to Basel’s history and even include the basilisk, the city’s emblem. Here are some of the scenes you’ll find inside Basel Town Hall:

Basel Minster

Cathedral of Basel, Switzerland
Basel Minster Beautiful Spires, Basel, Switzerland

Second on my list of Basel’s most beautiful places is the Basel Minster.

Basel Minster Beautiful Facade, Basel, Switzerland

This historic landmark is a favorite among photographers, and for good reason. In my opinion, it’s the most scenic place in Basel for two main reasons: its striking Gothic architecture and its prime location overlooking the Rhine River.

Situated between the Mittlere and Wettstein bridges, Basel Minster is easy to recognize. Its two towering spires, Georgstrum and Martinstrum, rise over 60 meters high, making it one of the most prominent features of the city’s skyline. The view from the Wettstein Bridge is particularly photogenic, especially with the church’s colorful tiled roof in the frame. It’s about a five-minute walk to Basel Minster from either the Wettstein Bridge or Basel Town Hall.

As you arrive at Minster Cathedral Square, the sight of the church greets you. At first glance, it may not seem all that impressive, especially if you’ve visited more extravagant churches in other European cities. But the real beauty of Basel Minster lies in its cloister, which is one of the most picturesque places in Basel.

Entry to the church is free, so make sure to step inside! The cloister offers dramatic views, especially when strong sunlight filters through the arcades and windows. The Gothic architecture, combined with the tablets on the walls, creates a unique atmosphere. Be sure to walk to the far end of the cloister, where you’ll find a beautiful view of the Rhine River through the windows.

For an even better view, head up Basel Minster’s tower, which provides a panoramic look at the city. The climb isn’t the easiest—there are 230 narrow steps, and some sections require holding onto a rope for support. But the effort is worth it! Along the way, you’ll also see a massive bell and its wooden support structure. If climbing the tower isn’t for you, don’t worry! You can still take in a sweeping view of Basel from the platform behind the church.

Beyond the views and cloister, Basel Minster also houses impressive artwork. The pulpit, the sculptures of Saint George and the dragon, and the Seducer & Misguided Virgin are particularly worth checking out. You can find the church’s opening hours on its official website.

Saint Paul’s Church

Saint Paul's Church springtime, Basel, Switzerland

Another great place to visit in Basel is Saint Paul’s Church. It’s a quiet and peaceful retreat in the middle of the city, just a short tram ride from Basel Train Station or a few minutes’ walk from Basel Zoo. If you’re coming from Marktplatz or Basel Town Hall, you can get there with a 15-minute walk or a quick ride on tram number 8. No matter where you are in the city, it’s easy to reach.

Saint Paul’s Church is a beautiful place with impressive neo-classical architecture, surrounded by trees and a well-kept garden that adds to its calm atmosphere. If you enjoy peaceful settings or live music, this might be a great spot to check out. You can visit the church’s blog to see their upcoming concerts.

Rhine River and Mittlere Bridge

Mittlere Bridge, Basel, Switzerland

If you have the chance to see the golden hour in Basel, don’t miss it. As the sun sets, its warm light gives the buildings a beautiful golden glow, making the cityscape look even more vibrant. For the best views of sunrise or sunset, head to the banks of the Rhine River or the Mittlere Bridge. These spots offer some of the most breathtaking views of this daily moment.

These are also some of the most beautiful places in Basel, and here’s why: they offer amazing panoramic views of the city, a romantic atmosphere, and fascinating artworks to discover as you explore the area. I’ll show you a view of the golden hour in Basel later, but for now, here’s a look at the Mittlere Bridge (see below).

Mittlere Bridge golden hour, Basel, Switzerland

Aside from its amazing views, the Mittlere Bridge also has deep historical and cultural significance. Did you know that it stands on the oldest existing bridge site across the Rhine River? This 192-meter-long structure is made entirely from Swiss materials, including granite from the Saint-Gotthard Massif, which adds to its local importance.

The Mittlere Bridge connects Basel’s two historic districts: Grossbasel (Greater Basel) to the southwest of the Rhine and Kleinbasel (Small Basel) to the northeast. If you’re an early riser and want to experience the golden hour in Basel, I’d recommend heading to the riverbank in Kleinbasel. This area feels like a small park, with benches, charming shops, and lush trees. The panoramic view makes it a great spot for a relaxing morning picnic.

While you’re there, take a walk along the riverbank—you’ll come across two unique artworks that add character to the area. Starting from the Mittlere Bridge, the first piece you’ll see is a small sculpture that pays tribute to Grossbasel.

The location where you can find the miniature is also the vantage point of Grossbasel. Then, continue a little further, and you’ll encounter the cute basilisk fountain. For those who want to see the golden hour in Basel and the Rhine River before sunset, the viewing platform behind Basel Minster is the best place to go.

From there, you’ll get a mix of old and new—medieval houses standing alongside modern buildings that shape the skyline. Here’s a preview of what you can expect when exploring the Mittlere Bridge and the Rhine River:

Basel Messe Exhibition Center

Basel Messe Exhibition Center, Basel, Switzerland

If your first stop in Basel is the Mittlere Bridge, you’ll quickly see that the city isn’t just about historical landmarks. Modern skyscrapers rising behind traditional houses reveal Basel’s contemporary side. One notable example is the Basel Messe Exhibition Center. Even if modern architecture isn’t usually your thing, this building might surprise you. It’s a great example of how Basel blends old and new, and in my opinion, it’s the most impressive modern building in the city.

Here’s the exact location of the Basel Messe Exhibition Center in Google Maps.

The Basel Messe Exhibition Center is a striking example of modern architecture. Its exterior, with a design that looks like a woven pattern, immediately grabs attention. The textured aluminum cladding adds to its unique appearance, but the real highlight is the massive circular opening in the Messeplatz section. You’ll notice it right away as soon as you step off the tram at Messeplatz station.

This combination of innovative design and bold architecture makes the Basel Messe Exhibition Center one of the most interesting buildings in the city.

One of its most distinctive features is the “Fenster zum Himmel” or “Window to Heaven.” This giant hole in the structure, covered in the same textured aluminum as the rest of the building, stands out because of its shape.

Looking up through it creates a fascinating optical illusion—it almost feels like the sky is pulling you in or that the woven aluminum is shifting around you. For minimalist photographers, the “Window to Heaven” is an incredible subject that captures the interaction between architecture and nature.

As its name suggests, the Basel Messe Exhibition Center hosts exhibitions and conferences. It also occasionally holds music and food festivals, as well as special exhibits like “Van Gogh Alive.”

You can check the events list from the official website of the Basel Messe Exhibition Center.

The Basel Messe Exhibition Center is a massive and unique building, but unless there’s an event or exhibit happening, a visit would likely be brief. It’s worth checking out if you’re staying in Basel for a while, but not a must if you’re short on time.

Tinguely Fountain & Museum

Tinguely Fountain, Basel, Switzerland

The Tinguely Museum is one of Basel’s most unique attractions, celebrating creativity through kinetic art that fascinates both kids and adults. The moving exhibits inside are truly one of a kind.

The museum also features a photogenic gallery with incredible views of the Rhine River near Schwarzwaldbrücke. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by a peaceful garden with neatly kept lawns and more kinetic sculptures. These special touches make the Tinguely Museum a great place to visit in Basel.

Simply put, the museum is a tribute to the creative genius of Jean Tinguely, a Swiss sculptor known for his kinetic art and mechanical sculptures, often called Métamatics. Here’s a video to give you a glimpse of what’s inside:

By the way, there are two places where you can find his works in Basel. Most of Tinguely’s artworks are in the museum, but you can also find a few in the Tinguely fountain in front of the Theater Basel.

From an engineering perspective, Jean Tinguely’s work is fascinating. His ability to merge creativity with complex engineering concepts is impressive. The way he precisely calculated the length and movement of each part to create ever-changing mechanical art is truly remarkable. It’s as if he brought his creations to life.

The Tinguely Museum isn’t just about looking at art—it’s an interactive experience that engages all your senses. As the Basel tourism office puts it, it’s a place where discovery, laughter, and amazement come together.

For visiting details, check out the museum’s official website, where you can also book your ticket. And here’s a bonus—if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you get free entry! The pass gives you unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats across Switzerland and grants access to hundreds of museums, including the Tinguely Museum.

Vitra Design Museum

Vitra Museum, Basel, Switzerland
Vitra Museum

Wrapping up this list of amazing places to visit from Basel is the Vitra Campus & Design Museum, known worldwide for its impressive collection of modern furniture designs. But Vitra is more than just a museum—it’s one of the top design museums in the world, exploring the connection between design and architecture. If you’re into home styling, this place is definitely worth a visit.

The Vitra Design Museum features an extensive collection of furniture, with some pieces dating back to the 19th century. The Vitra Campus is also famous for its bold architecture, making it a dream destination for minimalists. Its sleek, futuristic design is eye-catching, and the surrounding landscape adds to its beauty.

Interestingly, you don’t even need to go inside to appreciate Vitra’s unique style. The museum building itself, with its deconstructivist design, looks like something straight out of a Marvel movie—almost as if Doctor Strange had twisted and reshaped it.

Here are some of the incredible sights that await you at Vitra.
