Based on everything I’ve learned so far, Italy is one of the most beautiful places in Europe. As a traveler, it has everything I look for, and I think most people would find it amazing too.
There are incredible landmarks that reflect thousands of years of history, stunning architecture that leaves visitors in awe, and famous artworks that have inspired millions. You’ll also find dramatic coastlines with picture-perfect villages, alpine lakes that feel like a trip back in time, and, of course, the Dolomites, where every mountain view is breathtaking.
Let me share my bucket list destination in northern Italy and why it’s such an awesome place to explore. We’ll start in Tuscany and move on to Liguria, then head to Lombardy, Veneto, and finally Trentino-Alto Adige (also known as Südtirol).
Florence

What’s to Love About Northern Italy? It’s home to some of the world’s most iconic artworks and landmarks that will leave you inspired, amazed, and completely captivated. From the breathtaking Florence Cathedral, a Renaissance masterpiece, to Michelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell’Accademia and Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus at the Uffizi Gallery, Florence is a paradise for anyone seeking true beauty.

Cinque Terre

The beauty of Northern Italy will inspire you to snap tons of photos, especially in Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This coastal region, with its dramatic cliffs, is home to five colorful, quaint villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Monterosso al Mare, and Vernazza) and they offer romantic views, scenic hiking trails, and relaxing beach experiences. If you visit, make the most of your trip by joining a wine tasting while watching the sunset!

Milan

Milan, the second largest city in Italy, offers a blend of modern fashion—with bold designs and high-end brands—and remarkable sights from the past. What fascinates me most are Leonardo da Vinci’s fascinating works scattered across the city. You can find them in castles, churches, and museums. Beautiful discoveries. Beautiful experiences. Beautiful city. Its awe-inspiring Cathedral is an experience you can’t miss.

Bergamo

Northern Italy offers a lot of authentic experiences, which is one reason this region (and maybe all of Italy) is so beautiful. Take Bergamo, for example—its Venetian walls, untouched by invasions or bombings, are among the best-preserved fortifications in the country. This UNESCO World Heritage city is also home to intricately designed churches and facades that are the very definition of beauty.

Lake Como

If you combine beautiful buildings with a stunning location, the result is paradise—a glimpse of heaven. Lake Como in northern Italy is a perfect example, with ancient Roman villas scattered across breathtaking spots along the lake. It’s pure charm, from vine-covered buildings to wrought iron gates framing views of the lake and the Italian Alps. You can take a boat ride to see it all from the water or explore the villas yourself.

Lake Garda

Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, is a place where stunning views and historic spots come together. And there’s no shortage of adventure! You’ll find incredible experiences with its archaeological sites, medieval castles, charming villages, and scenic hikes. Plus, the food and culture here are uniquely influenced by the region’s famous lemons. There’s so much to see and enjoy. There’s so many opportunities to make beautiful memories.

Verona

What’s to love about Northern Italy? It’s home to Verona, the city of love. This beautiful city is the setting for the famous story of Romeo and Juliet, and visiting feels like stepping into their tale. But Verona is more than just that! Strolling through its streets is an experience in itself, with historic landmarks, charming sights, and panoramic views all around. Raise a glass of wine as you watch the sunset over its historic center.

Venice

Venice needs no introduction. Known as the Queen of the Adriatic, this floating city is truly one of a kind. It’s one of the must-have experiences in Northern Italy that adds so much to the region’s beauty. The best part? You don’t need an expensive tour to see why it’s special. Just wander the streets, hop on a gondola, and let Venice’s impressive architecture speak for itself. It’s definitely a bucket-list destination!

Trento

The further north you go in Northern Italy, the more breathtaking the scenery becomes. You’ll see it for yourself when you reach Trento, a historic city surrounded by stunning sights—snowcapped mountains, alpine lakes, and castles in picture-perfect spots. Visit for a mix of incredible experiences, including its rich history of Christianity, the Italian military, and the natural history of the Dolomites.

Bolzano

Northern Italy is full of diverse experiences, which is why visitors leave with such great memories. You’ll see what I mean when you reach Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites. As you stroll through its colorful streets, you’ll hear a mix of German and Italian. One glance at the main square reveals striking architecture, while another reveals stunning views. Don’t miss Ötzi, one of the region’s most fascinating discoveries, waiting for you here too.

Cortina d’Ampezzo

At the heart of the Dolomites—arguably the most breathtaking part of Northern Italy—lies Cortina d’Ampezzo, the perfect spot to take in the country’s natural beauty. No matter which direction you head from this town, you’ll come across spectacular peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and unforgettable adventures. Like Venice, I think Cortina and the Dolomites play a huge role in making Northern Italy such an amazing place to visit.
