10 Stunning Bucket List Destinations in Southern Germany
We all travel to experience something amazing, feel awe, and create unforgettable memories. That’s always my goal, and if you feel the same, then the incredible places I’ve found in southern Germany are definitely worth checking out. These places offer stunning views, rich history, and a bit of magic—everything you need to satisfy your wanderlust.
If I had to describe southern Germany in one word based on its different destinations, it’d be “diverse.”
This region feels like a fairytale come to life, with charming towns that look like they belong in a storybook. Not only are they stunning, but they also host some of the best beer festivals you’ll ever experience. Then, there are the alpine villages, which are more than just cozy spots in the mountains. The houses are decorated with beautiful murals, turning each one into a piece of art. And let’s not forget the mountains—they’re home to the world’s most magical castle, Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle.
If I had to break down the most beautiful places I’ve seen into three categories, I’d go with fairytale towns, scenic alpine villages, and magical castles.
- Bamberg
- Wüzburg
- Rothenburg ob der Tauber
- The Black Forest
It’s kind of funny, but one of the biggest reasons I wanted to visit the fairytale-like places in southern Germany was actually a video game I played as a kid. Ever heard of Warcraft? It’s a strategy game full of stories about kings and mythical creatures.
I was always hooked on the medieval setting—everything from the castles and knights to the timber-framed houses in the game fascinated me. I’d spend hours daydreaming about it all. If you’re anything like me, and you grew up in a country that wasn’t discovered until the 16th century, I bet you’d be curious about this stuff too.
The best part? You can still experience medieval times today. All you have to do is pack your bags and head to Europe. There are so many preserved medieval towns in the countries where these legendary stories came from, and southern Germany is one of the best spots.
It’s like stepping into a time machine, with charming timber-framed houses, well-preserved structures, and restored historical monuments. It’s a feast for both your eyes and your imagination.
- Oberammergau
- Garmisch-Partenkirchen
- Mittenwald
- Berchtesgaden
If you’re looking for a slice of paradise, you’ve got to check out the Alps. It’s absolutely stunning. The mountains are breathtaking, and the lakes are so peaceful. It’s the perfect place to find peace of mind or just feel awe-struck.
And the best part? Germany, especially Upper Bavaria, is lucky enough to have this incredible landscape. Not only will you see amazing views, but you’ll also have the chance to try some once-in-a-lifetime activities. If you’re really fortunate, these experiences can even be life-changing.
The cherry on top? These unforgettable adventures are just a short trip away from some charming, culturally rich towns in Upper Bavaria. It’s like getting two amazing experiences in one.
- Lichtenstein Castle
- Nueschwanstein Castle
I’m sure many of you have experienced the magic of Universal Studios or Disneyland, and I bet you didn’t miss the chance to admire the castle sitting at the heart of the park. Why am I so sure? Because I’ve been there too! I’ll admit, I made sure not to miss the castle, and of course, I had to get a photo with it.
I still remember the tourists who seemed to have all the time in the world, blocking the best spot for a picture. I was silently thinking, “Could you let someone else have a turn?” Pretty funny, right? The experience was fun, but then I realized the castle wasn’t real. That’s where southern Germany stands out.
In southern Germany, you’ll find actual castles, and visiting them offers a much deeper, more meaningful experience. While the castles at amusement parks are fun, they’re mainly there for entertainment and profit.
Bamberg
Let’s begin with Bamberg, a charming town in southern Germany known for its medieval town center and famous smoked beers.
Located along the Regnitz River, Bamberg sits between seven hills in northern Bavaria. Its unique landscape has earned it the nickname “Rome of Germany” because, like Rome, it has seven hills topped with churches. People also call it the “Venice of Germany” for its picturesque river views, similar to those in Venice.
The main reasons to visit Bamberg are pretty clear.
- First, the old town is amazingly well-preserved, with buildings that date back centuries, giving you a real feel for the Middle Ages. The grand cathedral is a must-see, with stunning artwork like The Tomb of Emperor Heinrich II and Empress Kunigunde. And then there’s the Bamberg Horseman statue, which is famous all over Germany.
- The second reason? The town has this perfect mix of romantic, charming, and picturesque views. Imagine a gondola ride along the river, passing by timber-framed houses and the iconic Old Town Hall, or visiting a hilltop abbey where you can relax in the gardens and take in a stunning view of the city.
- And finally, Bamberg is known for its smoked beer, something you won’t find anywhere else. The locals have been brewing it for centuries using traditional methods, and tasting a beer that’s been enjoyed for over a thousand years is an experience you won’t forget.

Wurzburg
Just west of Bamberg is Würzburg, often called the “city of a hundred churches.” It’s known for its dry wines and serves as the capital of Bavaria’s Franconian region.
Walking around, you can’t help but notice the stunning architecture—churches, palaces, and fortresses all over the place. Inside these buildings, there are amazing artworks that really grab your attention. The scale, the detail, and the sheer number of these pieces make Würzburg feel different from other towns in southern Germany.
When exploring Würzburg, three things really stood out to me.
- First, the churches and chapels. They’re more than just places of worship—they’re like a museum of masterpieces. Every church is decked out with stunning rococo details, and the intricate designs are enough to leave anyone in awe.
- Second, the Würzburg Residence Palace—definitely a must-see. It’s a perfect example of Rococo architecture, and you can’t help but wonder, “How is this even possible?” Plus, it’s home to the world’s largest fresco, created by Giambattista Tiepolo.
- Finally, the wines. Würzburg’s dry wines are some of the best around. The city has been serious about wine quality since 1644, and their specialty is a unique wine made from the Mariensteiner grape, a cross between Riesling and Silvaner. Definitely worth trying.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber sits between Bamberg and Würzburg in the south, and it’s home to the Plönlein, that iconic German spot you’ve probably seen online.
The town’s old town is straight out of a storybook—charming, well-preserved, and lined with colorful, pastel-colored half-timbered houses. It’s one of those places where you can’t stop taking pictures. Everywhere you look, there’s something beautiful just waiting to be captured.
There are plenty of reasons to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but these three really stand out.
- First, it’s one of only three towns in Germany that still has its original city walls. The quaint houses and towering structures make it a must-see destination, and adding it to your bucket list is a no-brainer. The town offers a full medieval experience that’s still alive and well today.
- Second, the festivals here are a must-do. If you’re in town during the Imperial City Days or the Master Draught Festival, it feels like stepping into a time machine. You’ll see people in traditional medieval clothing, re-enacting customs and rituals from centuries past.
- Finally, Rothenburg is home to some fascinating museums like the Medieval Crime Museum and Historical Vault. These places take you deep into the past, showing you real artifacts that were once used to uphold justice and punish criminals in the medieval world.

Black Forest
The Black Forest, in the southwest of Germany, is where many of the fairy tales we know today, especially those by the Grimm brothers, came from. And in my opinion, it’s the complete package!
The scenery is breathtaking, the towns are full of charm with their half-timbered houses, and the medieval architecture is incredible. On top of that, there are peaceful spas and fun amusement parks. It really feels like a destination within a destination, especially with the seven beautiful towns and villages scattered across the region.
The Black Forest is one of the most beautiful spots in southern Germany, and it’s easy to see why.
- First off, there’s just so much natural beauty—mountains, lakes, waterfalls—it’s the perfect place to relax and breathe in some fresh air. But what really stands out are the spruce trees, growing so close together they create this dark, almost magical look. It’s hard to describe, but it’s something you have to see to truly appreciate.
- The area is also home to some really charming towns. These aren’t just places with great views—they’ve got so much more to offer. Think spas like those in Baden-Baden, castles like the ones in Heidelberg, and delicious food at Michelin-star restaurants, especially in Baiersbronn.
- And if you’re looking for something to do, there’s no shortage of options. You can climb the spiral lookout at Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald, check out the hands-on exhibits at the Black Forest Open-air Museum, or visit Europa Park if you’re in the mood for some thrilling rides. Whatever you decide to do, you’re guaranteed to have an amazing time.

Oberammergau
Oberammergau is one of those places in Southern Germany that really stands out. It’s got this special vibe that comes from its deep-rooted traditions and culture, passed down for centuries.
The village is most famous for its Passion Play, a tradition that started as a vow the locals made to God. Every decade, they re-enact the Passion of Christ to keep that promise alive. And if you wander around, you’ll notice the town’s wood carving tradition and the Lüftlmalerei murals that decorate the buildings—together, they give the place a unique charm that’s hard to find anywhere else.
So, why visit Oberammergau?
- First off, there’s the legendary Passion Play, which only happens once every 10 years—definitely something to catch when it’s on. During this rare event, over a thousand villagers take part in the performance, all to honor a promise made to God. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have in southern Germany.
- Then, if you’re into craftsmanship, Oberammergau is famous for its woodcarving. The villagers have been perfecting this craft for over 500 years. For a close-up view, check out the Pilatus House, known for its gorgeous Lüftlmalerei murals, and get a glimpse of this ancient tradition in action.
- And don’t assume Oberammergau is all calm and quiet—it’s home to the world’s longest alpine coaster. This 2.6-kilometer ride packs in 73 turns, 9 jumps, and 7 waves, all while zooming down the mountain at 40 km/h. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and tradition!

Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Just a short drive south of Oberammergau, you’ll find Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or GaPa, as the locals call it. It’s the perfect spot to kick off an adventure to Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain.
The town is tucked in a valley, surrounded by towering peaks, and everywhere you look, there’s something breathtaking. The houses with Lüftlmalerei and the chalets covered in flowers make the whole place feel like a postcard. Walking through the streets, it’s hard not to be amazed by the scenery. Plus, as the biggest town in the area, there’s no shortage of great shops and restaurants for just about every taste.
Why visit Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Let me tell you about three things that make it unforgettable.
- First, the town is your gateway to the incredible Bavarian Alps. You can easily explore towering mountain peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and a breathtaking gorge—all in one day.
- Second, you don’t even have to leave the town to be wowed. The town centers are gorgeous on their own. Take a stroll down Fruhlingstrasse or Ludwigstrasse, and you’ll be surrounded by charming flower-filled chalets and vibrant murals. Each street is like a snapshot of the town’s culture, and the vibe is totally welcoming.
- Finally, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is surrounded by amazing places to explore. From the peaceful village of Kirchdorf Wamberg to the majestic Linderhof Palace of King Ludwig II, there’s no shortage of incredible sights. With so much to see, picking just one spot to visit is the hardest part.

Mittenwald
Travel southeast from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and you’ll find yourself in Mittenwald, a town so lovingly called the “Village of a Thousand Violins.” Its violin-making tradition is well-known all over Europe.
The streets here are lined with Lüftlmalerei, those beautiful painted murals on the buildings that give the place a special vibe. Just walking around the village feels like an adventure in itself. What makes it unique is how close the mountains are—you can hop on a cable car right from town and be at the top in no time. Mittenwald is also a gateway for anyone looking to explore the Karwendel mountains or take on the famous Dammkar Ski Route.
What makes Mittenwald worth visiting? Here are three reasons:
- First, the Dammkar Ski Route and the Karwendel Mountains. If you’re into outdoor sports, especially skiing and hiking, this place is a dream. Dammkar has an amazing ski route that’s 7 kilometers long and drops 1,400 meters from the top of Karwendel—it’s the longest in Germany.
- Second, the Leutasch Gorge. Just south of Mittenwald, this gorge is a beautiful spot full of myths and stories waiting to be discovered. There are steel walkways through the gorge offering incredible views and a chance to face any fear of heights.
- Third, Mittenwald’s Hummock Meadows, or “Buckelwiesen,” is a one-of-a-kind landscape with grassy bumps left behind from the Ice Age. Home to over 200 plant species, it bursts into color in the spring with rare alpine flowers. Whether hiking in winter or taking a leisurely walk in summer, the meadows make for an unforgettable experience.

Berchtesgaden is tucked away in the far southeast of Germany. It’s famous for its salt mines, but over time, it’s turned into a favorite spot for anyone who loves nature and adventure.
The town leads you to Konigssee, Germany’s most stunning lake, and Röthbach Waterfall, the tallest in the country. And then there’s the Eagle’s Nest, a breathtaking spot high in the mountains with a rich history, once used by the Nazis.

It’s impossible not to be drawn in by its beauty, especially when you hear that over 6,000 people visit daily during the peak season.
