Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a charming town with interesting architecture. In addition to its half-timbered houses, it also has unique churches. They’re a nice place to explore, especially if you enjoy wandering and coming across new things, like impressive religious artwork and distinct architecture.

St. James Church, also known as St. Jakob, is a lovely Lutheran church located in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This historic church was built over several centuries, from 1311 to 1484. Today, it’s an important stop for pilgrims on their way to the St. James Church in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

There are three things that will likely catch your eye when visiting.

  • First, the church’s choir is surrounded by tall, colorful stained glass windows. These windows show various saints and Christian beliefs. If you visit early in the morning, you’ll see the sunlight shine through the windows, making them burst with color.
  • The second standout feature is the church’s Great Organ. Built by Rieger Orgelbau, this organ has 69 stops, 108 ranks, and 5,500 pipes. It’s not only impressive in size but also one of the largest in Bavaria.
  • Lastly, don’t miss the altars at both ends of the church: the Holy Blood Altarpiece and the Twelve Apostles Altar. The Holy Blood Altarpiece, created by Tilman Riemenschneider, is particularly breathtaking. The craftsmanship of the wooden carvings is truly remarkable.

In addition to the Holy Blood Altarpiece and Twelve Apostles Altar, the Church of Saint James also features other artworks, including portraits of Elisabeth of Thuringia, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul.

If you’re planning to visit the church, try to go during the Advent season, just before Christmas. You can enjoy a free 30-minute organ concert, which is a perfect break after exploring Rothenburg’s Market Square.

Wondering how to get to Saint James Church? After checking out Market Square, another must-see spot is just a short walk away. Head to the northwestern side of the square and follow the road called Grüner Markt, or Green Market. A short stroll will lead you right to the church, a late 15th-century Gothic structure with impressive, towering spires.

The Church of Saint Peter and Paul is another interesting spot in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It’s smaller than Saint James Church and located on the edge of town in a village called Detwang, next to the Tauber River. If you don’t have a car, expect about a 20-minute hike from Rothenburg’s Market Square to get there.

Detwang is a quiet, countryside village that dates back to the 10th century, with farms, meadows, and houses similar to those in Rothenburg. Inside the church, you’ll find another stunning work by the famous Tilman Riemenschneider at the altar. Just keep in mind that there’s a small entry fee.

On your way from Rothenburg’s town center to Detwang, you’ll pass by Saint Wolfgang Church. It is a unique church, built into the town’s walls and features beautiful late-Gothic tracery and three altars from the 1500s, during the Riemenschneider Period.

Visiting this church, you’ll probably find it interesting to think that the early residents of Rothenburg used it as part of their military defense. Inside, narrow passages and steep steps lead to impressive underground defense chambers. The thick walls and arrow slits offer a glimpse into medieval life for soldiers in Rothenburg.

Saint Wolfgang Church, also known as the “Shepherd’s Church,” is dedicated to Saint Wolfgang, the patron saint of shepherds. Sheep farming was an important part of Rothenburg’s medieval economy, and shepherds would come here to pray for blessings on their work and livelihood.

To find Saint Wolfgang Church, start at Rothenburg’s Market Square and head toward Saint James Church. Look for the tunnel under the western side of the church, then continue walking north on Klingengasse street. After a few blocks, you’ll spot the Klingentor Tower in the distance. Pass under the Klingentor Tower, and you’ll reach Saint Wolfgang Church.
