Chillon Castle, to me, is the most compelling attraction you can visit from Montreux. It’s one of the most iconic landmarks in Switzerland, and it’s easy to see why. While it may not be obvious from photos, the castle actually sits on a rock in Lake Geneva, creating a breathtaking setting.
If you look at it from the north, the castle almost seems to float on the lake, with the snow-capped French Alps in the background. It’s an incredible sight!
History enthusiasts will also appreciate it—the castle dates back to the 12th century and has been ruled by the Savoy, Bernese, and Vaudois. Inside, you’ll find a collection of historical artifacts, including furniture, weapons, murals, and unique architectural details. There are also temporary exhibits throughout the year.
A fun fact about Chillon Castle is that it once served as a prison. The most famous prisoner was François Bonivard, a political activist who was held in the dungeons for six years. His story later inspired Lord Byron’s poem The Prisoner of Chillon, and Byron even carved his name into one of the dungeon pillars, which you can still see today.

Even when the Montreux Jazz Festival isn’t happening, the city still carries the spirit of pre-2000s music, largely thanks to Queen.
