What makes Verona a city to love is simple: it is a city of love.
Verona, the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, brings the story to life as visitors walk through the very places tied to the legendary lovers. These locations offer a chance to deepen connections and experience romance and inspiration in a way that feels almost timeless.
While Romeo and Juliet literature is fictional, it was inspired by a real couple from Verona who lived in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. Shakespeare is thought to have encountered their story through Arthur Brooke’s 16th-century poem The Tragical History of Romeo and Juliet.
Casa di Giulietta
One of the most well-known is Juliet’s balcony at Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s House) on Cappello Street.

This 13th-century building is believed to be where Romeo first courted Juliet. Visitors can see the famous balcony from the courtyard, which is free to enter. When you visit, you’ll see a bronze statue of Juliet, and you might wonder why people are touching her right breast. Legend says it brings good luck in love.
Visitors can step onto Juliet’s balcony, but they’ll need a ticket to the museum. Standing there gives a new perspective of the courtyard below, making it easy to imagine the story coming to life. Inside, the museum features Renaissance-era costumes and the actual bed from Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film Romeo and Juliet.
Since the courtyard is free to enter, Juliet’s House can get crowded, especially during peak season. To get the best experience, try visiting early in the morning when it’s quieter. This gives you a better chance to soak in the atmosphere and imagine the moment Romeo declared his love.

The story of Romeo and Juliet has made Juliet’s Balcony one of Verona’s most famous attractions, but romance can be felt all over the city. The historic architecture creates an old-world atmosphere that makes it easy to feel transported to another time. With grand arches, towering landmarks, and picturesque bridges, there’s plenty to take in.
During the golden hour, take a moment to enjoy the view from Ponte di Pietra, walk across Ponte di Castelvecchio, explore Piazza delle Erbe, pass through Arco dei Gavi, soak in the scenery at Colle San Pietro, or simply wander near the Verona Arena.
You might also want to visit the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, the church where Romeo and Juliet were married.
Well of Love
As you stroll through the streets of Verona, you might notice an old well that seems to hold echoes of a love long past. This is the Well of Love, a place where passion and sorrow are woven together.

It holds the story of Corrado, a young soldier, and Isabella, a woman of rare beauty, whose love was met with a cruel twist of fate. Let me tell you their story.
During Emperor Maximilian’s rule in the early 16th century, a young soldier named Corrado di San Bonifacio fell deeply in love with Isabella Donati, a beautiful noblewoman. Despite Corrado’s many attempts to win her heart, Isabella seemed indifferent and uninterested.
One day, near a courtyard by the Church of San Marco, they crossed paths again. Frustrated by Isabella’s cold demeanor, Corrado accused her of being as cold as the water in the courtyard well. In response, Isabella harshly retorted that if he thought she was so cold, he should jump into the well.
In a dramatic and tragic turn of events, Corrado took her words literally and jumped into the well during the cold winter, leading to his death. Overcome by grief and realizing her true feelings for Corrado, Isabella followed him into the well, resulting in her own tragic demise.
Today, some visitors who know their story stop by to pay a visit. If you’d like to see it yourself, you can find the well in Vicolo San Marco in Foro, near Piazza Erbe.
Above the well, there’s a plaque inviting people to make a wish for love by tossing in a coin. Legend has it that throwing a coin into the well might bring good luck in love, echoing the tale of Corrado and Isabella.
