Neuschwanstein: The Ups and Downs at a Glance
Everyone’s welcome to visit Neuschwanstein Castle! You can explore both inside and outside this iconic landmark. However, let’s be real. Yes, Neuschwanstein Castle looks amazing in person and in pictures, but like anything popular, there are some downsides. All those stunning views mean tons of people.
Expect long lines, especially in the summer, and you might feel a little rushed on your tour. Plus, you’ll run into crowds at all the best spots, and some people can be a bit annoying with their cameras. Also, planning your trip takes some thought – from figuring out how to get there to choosing the best time to visit.
Indeed, getting to Neuschwanstein Castle might be a bit of a hassle, but it’s so worth it if you can brush off the minor annoyances. Think about the castle’s amazing architecture and stunning views. Plus, its history is super interesting. Oh, and did you know it inspired Cinderella’s Castle in Disney? Who knows, it might even inspire you too!
Here’s something to keep in mind about visiting Neuschwanstein Castle: it’s smaller than other castles because it was never fully finished. If you’re expecting to spend hours exploring intricate artwork and architecture, you might feel a little let down—the tour only lasts about 30 minutes to handle the crowds.
But don’t worry, there’s plenty to do nearby. You can hike the trails for stunning views of the Alps and the castle, check out the beautiful Hohenschwangau Castle, or enjoy some quiet time by the lake, where you’ll get great views of both castles.

Note: One thing that really threw me for a loop when I was planning my trip to Neuschwanstein Castle was trying to figure out which website to use. There are like, three official ones! You’ve got the Bavarian Palace Administration, the castle’s own website, and even the town of Hohenschwangau has its own site. All those official websites have tons of info, but it’s kind of a mess to navigate. You have to jump around a lot to find what you need. I wrote these blog posts to make things easier for you. I tried to put all the important stuff in one place so you don’t have to go crazy searching.
But if you want to dig deeper and find even more info than I included, these two websites might be helpful…
- The official website for Neuschwanstein Castle (neuschwanstein.de), run by the Bavarian Palace Administration, is all about getting to the castle, how accessible it is, and the history behind it and King Ludwig II.
- On the other hand, the official website for Hohenschwangau (hohenschwangau.de) is more like a visitor’s guide. It’s got all the info you need to plan your trip, like tickets, opening hours, how to find the best views, parking, and how to get there using maps and public transportation.
